The houses in New Haven, and what they mean for your dumpster

New Haven has about 60,300 homes, and the typical one was built around 1954. 40% went up before 1940, one of the oldest housing stocks on our routes. 39% of homes sit in two- to four-unit buildings, the two- and three-families where the driveway is often shared. Most households rent (72%), so much of our New Haven work is owners and landlords clearing units between tenants.

  • Plaster is heavy. Walls in older New Haven houses are usually plaster and lath, far heavier than drywall. On a plaster gut, weight runs out before space does, so the 20 yard's 2 tons is the safer pick over the 12 yard's 1 ton, and the load has to stay level with the top rail.
  • Check for asbestos first. About 78% of New Haven homes were built before 1980, when asbestos still turned up in floor tile, pipe insulation, and some siding and roofing. Asbestos cannot go in any dumpster: have suspect material tested, and removed by a licensed abatement contractor, before demolition starts.
  • Cleanouts. The median home here has 4.5 rooms. A full move-out or estate cleanout at that size usually fits a 20 yard, and a single apartment often fits a 12.
  • Shared driveways. In a two- or three-family, agree on the spot with the other households before delivery. The container needs a clear patch about 15 by 10 feet plus a straight run for the truck, and it should not box anyone's car in for the week.

What is different about New Haven placements

  • About 72 percent of New Haven housing was built before 1970, much of it two- and three-family houses. Gutting those means plaster, lath, and old fixtures: heavy and bulky at once, so size up or plan a swap.
  • Curb space is tight on many New Haven streets; after the January 2026 storm the city kept its parking ban in force on 11 narrow streets even after lifting it elsewhere. Tell us the street width and flag overhead wires when you book, and keep the container clear of the 25 feet around hydrants, intersections, and bus stops.
  • Only about 28 percent of homes are owner-occupied, so much of our New Haven work is landlords turning over units. A 20 yard usually handles one apartment; a 30 yard fits a full three-family cleanout.

Storms, floods, and cleanups in New Haven

  • Morris Cove is almost entirely high-risk flood zone: the shoreline ridge is about 11 feet above sea level, but the land drops to about 4 feet inland, where most of its densely built 1900 to 1930 houses sit. Flood cleanups and rebuilds there mean big loads on tight lots, so plan placement before the storm season.
  • The city is building a flood wall along I-95 by the harbor, removable flood gates on Long Wharf, and a stormwater pump station under a $160 million federal project. Until it is done, low areas near Long Wharf and the harbor still flood, and soaked drywall and contents call for a quick container.

What New Haven curbside pickup will not take

  • City bulk pickup is by appointment, one free appointment per qualifying household per year, and properties without city trash service are not eligible, which leaves out many multifamily buildings.
  • Bulk pickup takes no construction, demolition, or land-clearing debris: no shingles, plaster, sheetrock, roofing, lumber, stumps, soil, rocks, brick, concrete, insulation, or tile. That list is exactly what our dumpsters are for.
  • Curbside branches have to be cut to 4 feet and tied in bundles no more than a foot across, and leaves go in paper bags. For a tree job or a big yard cleanup, the container saves the cutting and bundling.

Timing your New Haven rental

  • Street sweeping runs April 1 to October 31 on 14 routes with set days each month (East Rock the second Monday and Tuesday, Westville the first, East Shore the fourth Wednesday and Thursday), with signs posted the day before. Avoid your sweeping day for delivery so the truck and your cars are not fighting for the curb.
  • During a snow parking ban, residential streets allow parking on one side only, downtown streets and posted snow emergency routes clear on both sides, and the city tickets and tows before the storm arrives. A winter container belongs in the driveway, with a plan for the cars it displaces.
