The houses in North Haven, and what they mean for your dumpster
North Haven has about 9,900 homes, and the typical one was built around 1964. 48% were built between 1940 and 1969: the postwar capes, ranches, and colonials that are now due for new kitchens, baths, and roofs. 81% are single-family detached houses, so nearly every job here has its own driveway to work with.
- Count roof layers. Many postwar roofs were re-shingled right over the original layer. For a single layer, figure about 5 to 8 squares in a 12 yard and 10 to 16 in a 20 yard; a two-layer tear-off fits roughly half that, so size by squares and layers, not by how the pile looks.
- Check for asbestos first. About 70% of North Haven homes were built before 1980, when asbestos still turned up in floor tile, pipe insulation, and some siding and roofing. Asbestos cannot go in any dumpster: have suspect material tested, and removed by a licensed abatement contractor, before demolition starts.
- Cleanouts. The median home here has 6.4 rooms. A whole-house cleanout at that size usually calls for a 30 yard; one floor, a garage, or a basement fits a 20.

Know before you book in North Haven
- From our yard
- North Haven is about 20 miles and 28 minutes from 81 Munson Street by road, which is why it sits on our regular routes.
- Paint and chemicals
- North Haven sends household hazardous waste to HazWaste Central at 90 Sargent Drive in New Haven on Saturday mornings from late May to mid-October, with pre-registration. Paint, stain, and varnish go free to in-town PaintCare drop-offs, including North Haven Paint and Hardware on Quinnipiac Avenue.
What is different about North Haven placements
- The town plan describes a housing stock weighted toward mid-century homes that increasingly need renovation, with many owners over 65. Estate cleanouts and post-sale remodels of those houses are the core of our North Haven work.
- Single-family zones cover most of the east and northwest sides of town, on lots that usually have room for a 20 or 30 yard. Tree-heavy streets are common, so check the branches over the driveway; the truck needs about 20 feet of clearance.
Storms, floods, and cleanups in North Haven
- The Quinnipiac River is tidal all the way through North Haven and has the highest flood potential in town, with smaller trouble spots on the east side of Sheffield Road, part of Tilert Court, and Todd Drive South. Flood cleanouts there are wet and heavy, so size by weight.
- On August 27, 2020, an EF1 tornado hit its peak, about 110 mph and 500 yards wide, crossing the Wilbur Cross Parkway and I-91 toward Arrowdale and Thompson Street. That same month, after Isaias, the town ran a one-time curbside pickup of fallen trees, but it did not take construction or household debris. Damaged fencing, roofing, and contents still needed a container.
What North Haven curbside pickup will not take
- Bulk pickup runs only in the last two full weeks of April and September, and it takes no construction or demolition items such as sinks or toilets, and no TVs or electronics. Outside those weeks, or for any remodel, a container is the way.
- Wooden furniture, carpet, and pool covers are not bulk items at all; they only go out with the trash if cut into four-foot lengths. A container takes them whole, no saw required.
- Leaves are collected only in the fall program, in paper bags or raked loose to the curb, never in the street. For spring and summer yard cleanups, a container handles it.
Timing your North Haven rental
- The police chief can declare a snow parking ban, and pushing driveway snow into the street is prohibited. Place a winter container so you can still clear the driveway without pushing snow into the road, and leave a lane open for the swap truck.
