10 Things You Can’t Throw in a Dumpster in Connecticut (And What to Do Instead)
Our rule is simple: if it can leak, burn, explode, or poison something, it doesn't go in the box. Here's the specific list, and, more usefully, where each thing actually goes in Connecticut.
The keep-out list
- Paint and stains. Connecticut runs PaintCare, a free take-back program; most paint and hardware stores accept leftover paint at no charge.
- Motor oil and automotive fluids. Auto parts stores and town transfer stations take used oil for free.
- Household chemicals, pesticides, solvents. Every region in CT runs HazWaste collection days; check your town's schedule.
- Propane tanks and compressed cylinders. Even "empty" ones. Exchange them at a retailer or bring them to a transfer station.
- Car and household batteries. Lead-acid batteries go back to any auto retailer; rechargeables have store drop-bins statewide.
- Tires. Actually, these can go in our containers; we charge a flat $15 per tire. Just mention the count when you book.
- Medical waste and sharps. Pharmacies and police-station drop boxes handle medications; sharps need approved containers.
- Refrigerants. Fridges, freezers, and window AC units need refrigerant recovery first. Ask us; we'll tell you the local options before you book.
- Asbestos and suspect materials. Old pipe insulation, some floor tiles. Licensed abatement only. When in doubt, test before demo.
- Wet concrete, liquids of any kind. Nothing that sloshes.
Things people assume are banned but we actually take
Mattresses (CT's Bye Bye Mattress program exists, but they're fine in our containers at a flat $25 each), tires at $15 each, TVs and e-waste, appliances without refrigerant, hot tubs, furniture of any size, and yard waste. See the full list on any size page.
